Lawrence Transfer and Storage was founded in Roanoke, Virginia in 1932 by Weldon T. Lawrence, Sr. In 1942, Lawrence Transfer and Storage joined the United Van Lines family to secure loads for its fleet of furniture vans.

Weldon T. Lawrence, Jr. succeeded his father as President in 1950 and vigorously set out to establish the Roanoke based operation as one of the leading moving and storage companies in the Eastern United States. In 1968, Lawrence began operating in the Waynesboro, VA area thanks to their acquisition of another local moving company. In 1972 they built a custom warehouse and office facility to house their Waynesboro operations.

In July 1976, Lawrence again acquired assets of another moving company and began operations in Durham, NC. In early 1977, this operation was moved to a 15 acre location in the Research Triangle Park near the Raleigh/Durham Airport. As a result of increased business in the Carolina’s, a Charlotte, NC location was opened in 1983, and a Greensboro, NC location was opened in 1985.

In 1986 the company name was changed to Lawrence Transportation Systems, Inc to better express our overall ability to meet the public’s transportation needs. LTS now has an established freight department and an impressive fleet of equipment to cover all moving needs.

Weldon S. "Chip" Lawrence took over for his father in September 1992 as President. Since 1992 there has been significant growth in the freight division including the addition of a flatbed fleet and a load brokerage division. Today, Lawrence has become one of the largest regional truckload freight carriers on the East Coast.

In 1996 Lawrence Transportation built a new facility for the headquarters location and is located conveniently to I-81 in Botetourt County. The financial condition is exceptionally strong as evidenced by Dunn and Bradstreet rating of 3A1. Lawrence continues to maintain its affiliation with United Van Lines and is regularly honored as one of its Top Producers and Top Hauling agents.

Lawrence Transportation Systems established an Employee Stock Ownership Plan "ESOP" in January 1998 and presently the company is 100% employee owned.

Today our household goods division has locations in Roanoke, Virginia; Waynesboro, Virginia and Greensboro, North Carolina. Lawrence has been a leader in the moving industry and was instrumental in the changes to simplify pricing for the consumer. Lawrence works diligently to be environmentally friendly by reducing packing material usage and recycling throughout our company.

Through over 75 years and 4 generations Lawrence Transportation Systems is still proving themselves as leader in the relocation and transportation industries.

In 2000, Lawrence Transportation Systems acquired Rusco Window Company, a replacement window manufacturing company, which was relocated to our present Roanoke, VA location.

At the beginning of 2003, LTS became the “CASE Equipment” dealer for the entire commonwealth of Virginia under the name Lawrence Equipment. This division sells and services heavy equipment as well as having a large parts department. We have locations in Roanoke, Waynesboro, Richmond and plans to expand into northern Virginia and the Tidewater area.

In 2006, we opened Lawrence AG Equipment. This division sells and services farm and agricultural equipment. We have locations in Roanoke and Dayton, Virginia.

Affordable Container Service (ACS), a waste container service company was acquired by Lawrence in January 2006. Containers are provided for construction, commercial and residential use.

Lawrence Truck and Equipment is the official operating name of Lawrence’s shop and truck service facilities. The shop has always provided services for our own equipment and our contract van operators. Through the years, other businesses have come to us for assistance with fleet maintenance and today, our shop facilities are one of the most advanced in the area.
